SANTA CRUZ - Lance Amstrong, Levi Leipheimer, Oscar Freire and other world-class professional cyclists will compete May 18 to win the Santa Cruz leg of the 2010 Amgen Tour of California and be awarded with a one-of-a-kind prize: a surfboard created by legendary Santa Cruz shaper "Doug Haut".

"I think this trophy will be the most unique one on the tour," said 70-year-old Haut. "It's never been done before."

The Amgen Tour, a Tour de France-style cycling race, will come through Santa Cruz County for the third of eight stages. Each stage is required to provide a unique trophy or award for the winner, Haut said.

The tour's only coastal stage, Santa Cruz will honor its Surf City name by rewarding the stage winner with a real wave-rider.

"It will be a fully functional trophy," Haut said of the 6-foot-4 swallow tail he is working on in the back of his shop.
